New Batavia .:. an Irukandji simulator by Xay Tomsen

New Batavia ~ a virtual world sim in Second Life by Xay Tomsen

New Batavia map

The city-island of New Batavia is located in the farwest of the Kingdom of Irukandji.

New Batavia is also the capital of Kalamat State, a former French overseas territory, liberated and then annexed by Irukandji in mid 2008.

Terraforming of New Batavia was done by hand, complimented with sand, grass, and coral textures. The island was traversed by the Trans Irukandji Causeway from Sunset Shoals in the north to Kalamantayo Island in the south.

Other neighbouring islands were Rainbow Reef, Plage de Kalamat, and Grand Kalamat Island.

New Batavia is the capital city of Kalamat State. As such, the history of the two are directly intertwined. The concept for Kalamat came about late in the Irukandji story. The greater kingdom had been established for well over a year and was still expanding. I had bought off the estates to the south and north in order to expand, but to the west, I ran into a problem. A consortium of French bankers had set up a string of simulators there. They were an arrogant rude bunch, and overtly homophobic. Frequently, they would teleport over to a random Irukandji island and start spruiking hate speech at residents and visitors. My complaints via the proper channels yielded no results and frankly, Linden Labs didn't really want a huge gay-friendly continent in Second Life anyway, so they were of no help at all. So I decided to make a game of it. At the same time, ever-sympathetic toward the real-world plight of the Kanakas seeking independence for New Caledonia. I saw the opportunity to make a grand political statement. In my artist's mind, the cluster of western islands would be my New Caledonia, and the bankers that owned them, nothing more than petty Parisian bureaucrats. I decided to begin a war of intimidation and wipe them off the grid. I cut off any plans for expansion they might have by establishing Jillaroo State to the north, and then I built right up to their buffer zone in the west. Only a single grid square separated Bay of Plenty, Coraki Lagoons, and Splitrock Mountain from the French. They had nowhere to grow, and when they looked east, all they could see was row upon row of submarines, planes, and warships lined up on the edges of my sims. The intimidation worked. The French abandoned their estate and I dived in and claimed their territories. Nine new simulators followed, and so was born Kalamat State, liberated from the French and now annexed into the Kingdom of Irukandji.

Disappointingly, no photographs survive of New Batavia, however the Kalamat theme continued in later versions of Irukandji; at Kalamat Island in InWorldz in 2014, and Aratura in DigiWorldZ in 2016.
