"Gabba Under Lights" is companion piece to the short story of the same name. The picture reflects the rampant under-age male prostitution in the area in the 1980s. A parallel piece in this series is "Discoteque".
The title is a reference to night-cricket played at the Woolloongabba cricket ground, a short walk from this scene.
